What’s Our Sputnik?

This article published by the New York Time in 2010 was very eye opening. I understand that the United States is needed around the world. However, I struggle to accept the thought of sending millions of dollars to foreign countries when there are children in our own country that are starving and being abused. Again, I understand that we can not ignore the September 11th bombings or threats on our freedom, but why are we sending all of these countries millions of dollars when our economic outlook is so uncertain? As a country we should be focusing on building our country’s economic statue and keeping peace within our borders. I simply feel that we have enough issues on our home soil that we shouldn’t be helping others as much as we are. Our state and national government officials need to drive through some of our towns and visit the homes of those who really make America great. These individuals also need to realize that our students are this countries future. We must give them the tools to be competitive on a global level. Educating students in science and mathematics is an absolute must! Our students are our best potential investments.

  1. I couldn't agree more. I understand that there are countries that need help. What ever happened with taking care of your own responsibilities first? Our schools need to have the proper funding so we can help our future leaders, workers, teachers, etc. We must invest in the education of the American students.

  2. I also get very frustrated with this topic. If we do not take care of what we need (our future leaders in all areas) then how can we stay the strong nation that we are. A quote that I try to remember is "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future."-Franklin D. Roosevelt. I too understand the need to take care of things that involve the United State with other countries. However, I think we need to make sure our top priorities are taking care of what our country needs.

  3. One thing that came to mind when I read this was the movie "Charlie Wilson's War". (Yes, I know it was a fictionalized account.) At the end of the movie, when Afghanistan (with the covert backing of the US) has thrown the USSR out of their country, we had the opportunity to go in there and support building a modern education system for the nation.

We didn't. Instead, radical Islamic extremists filled the educational void and we ended up fighting an enormously expensive war.

I'm wondering if the investment in the human capital in that country would have avoided the huge military expenditure. Not to mention have won us a more moderate ally in the region?

    Just something to think about.

  4. I don't know if any of you have seen the movie Idiocracy, but this movie is perfect for this week's topic. It is all about how society could become if we do not take care of our own social issues, schools, and children of the future. Uneducated, scientifically illiterate citizens having children.

This is also one topic that I get so frustrated with. Maybe because I have felt the heat from the other side of the door from the U.S. military actions in other countries. The propaganda, the bombs, the hurt, and the upset that war brings and loss of funding within our own country just makes me sad and frustrated at the same time. We need to stop fighting other people's wars and let their governments fix their own problems.
